Abstract

Alpha-lipoic acid is one of the most powerful antioxidants used in both humans and animals. Many of its effects were proven: antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, analgesic, as a growth promoter. Numerous clinical studies showed the effectiveness of alpha-lipoic acid in diseases in which the antioxidant balance was disturbed. Alpha-lipoic acid reduces the complications of diabetes such as neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and vascular damage. It improves insulin resistance. In veterinary practice, alpha-lipoic acid is used as a component in supplements for dogs, cats, pigs, and birds. The aim of this review is to present new data about its therapeutic application.
